The IF Stockholm Open began on the 17th of October with 8 seeded players, namely Gael Monfils, Forgot Dimitrov, Ivo Karlovic, Alexander Zverev, Steve Johnson, Jack Sock, John Isner and Marcos Baghdatis respectively; and 20 unseeded players. The top 4 got a bye each in R32.
Monfils suffered a defeat in R16 by Elias, which was the Frenchman’s first match. The other players from the seeded top 4 made it to the Quarter Finals.
Jack Sock (who overcame Dustin Brown in R32) met Elias in the QF and is next to face the German, Zverev in the semis. The American, Ryan Harrison lost to Kevin Anderson in the R16. Whereas, Anderson went down to Dimitrov in the QF.
An interesting match from R32 was the giants’ match, seeded number 7 John Isner vs the Wild Card Juan Martin del Potro. del Potro defeated the American in a splendid fashion. He saved no break points and served 9 aces against John’s 15 aces. He won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(6) and raised the already positive head-to-head by another victory to 5-2. In the R16, he knocked out Nicolas Almagro and set another Battle of Giants’ against seeded number 3 Ivo Karlovic, whom he easily defeated, letting him take only 3 and 4 games respectively in the two sets.
The German Qualifier, Tobias Kamke, bagelled Elias Ymer in the second set in the R32 match, further defeating Radu Albot in R16, who reached the R16 en route defeating the seeded number 5 Steve Johnson. He has been knocked out by Alexander Zverev in the QF.
The Semi-Final line up is as follows:
(6) Sock vs (4) Zverev (Zverev leads the head-to-head 1-0, victory on hard)
del Potro vs (2) Dimitrov (del Potro leads the head-to-head 3-0, 2 victories on hard and 1 on grass)
The fixture for the semis shows that 5 of the 8 seeded players have been knocked out by the QF. Also, Sock, Zverev and, del Potro are yet to drop a set.
