Upset of the tournament was followed today on the day 6 at Shanghai. The US Open Champion, the Swiss man, Stan Wawrinka lost the QF match to Gilles Simon in straight sets, wherein Simon managed to take the final game with a double break as Wawrinka committed an unforced error. The Frenchman leads the head-to-head on hard surfaces, i.e. 2-1, and this was the second consecutive time that Wawrinka was knocked out by Simon on a hard court. Their last meeting on a hard court was at Shanghai itself, in 2014, R32, where Simon won in 3 sets.
To add to the London qualifiers’ defeat, Milos Raonic lost to the American Jack Sock in 3 sets. Whereas, Raonic bagelled Sock in the first set of the match, the latter managed to save 8 match points in the decider and knocked the Wimbledon’16 finalist out. “I wish I had done better in the third set,” said Raonic. “I think the double fault I hit on break point down in the second set, gave him belief. Other than that, the match could have gone both ways. He stepped up and he took it.” said Raonic.
Both, Wawrinka and Raonic have already reserved a berth for the WTF, London, with only 3 spots left for grab now.
On the seeded side, David Goffin defeated Gael Monfils in 3 sets as he took his revenge of the ATP 1000 Masters Canada event of R16 loss from him. They are now tied on their head-to-head now, 1-1.
Another seeded affair was, Andy Murray vs Lucas Pouille, where Murray managed a comfortable win against his opponent. This was the second meeting of their careers, and Pouille has managed to take only 7 games in a total of 4 sets played between them (6-2, 6-1 in Rome Masters’16 and 6-1, 6-3 in Shanghai Masters’16).
Since the beginning of the season, Goffin has been pulling some stunning victories against the top seeds, can he be a hindrance for Murray in the next match?
World number 1, Novak Djokovic had an easy victory in 2 sets over the Canadian Vasek Popisil, he seems to be really back with his indomitable form.
Tsonga, after losing the first set tie-break to Alexander Zverev, took the subsequent sets with a score line of 6-2, 7-5.
The resultant fixture for the QF stands as follows:
(1) Novak Djokovic vs Mischa Zverev (Djokovic leads the head-to-head 1-0)
Bautista-Agut vs (9) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (head-to-head 2-2)
Jack Sock vs Gilles Simon (head-to-head 1-1)
(6) David Goffin vs (2)Andy Murray (Murray leads the head-to-head 4-0)
