The 22nd edition of the ATP 250 Chennai Open, saw the seed number 2, Roberto-Bautista Agut, winning on the final day as he defeated the world number 99, Daniil Medvedev, in straight sets. Agut managed a clean sweep, committing only 3 unforced errors, winning 78% first serve points and 100% second serve points in the first set, and took it by a score line of 6-3.
The 20-year old Russian was expected to fight back, but could hardly manage past 4 games in the second set. “He was more consistent than me today,” said Medvedev. “He played amazing tennis. I couldn’t do much about it. I tried my best but he was the better player today.”
The second seeded Spaniard, Agut, is now 5-6 in the finals with his titles from Sofia (2016), Stuttgart (2014) and s-Hertogenborch (2014) titles.
“I think it’s a great tournament and that’s why it’s my fifth time in a row coming here,” said Bautista Agut. “This tournament has helped me a lot to get into the Top 50 players [in the world]. I’m a much better player now than five years ago. I have more experience and I’ve improved a lot of things. There are a lot of tournaments and a lot of points coming up, but I’m happy with the start to win the first week of the year.”
The Spaniard broke the #NextGenATP Star for 3-1 in the first and again for 5-4 in the second, before closing out the championship in the next game on his first match point. It took him 73 minutes to seal the deal.
