Unheard and Awful story of Rashmita Das
Bhubneshwar, India : An outstanding defender who participated in several state and national level football tournaments is now selling betel in her village to earn a living.
Rashmita, daughter of a daily wage labourer, started playing football at the age of 12. She represented India under-16 at the Asian Football federation (AFC) women’s qualifying competition at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2008. She also played for the country in senior FIFA AFC qualification round at Dhaka in 2011.
The same year, she played in Bahrain where senior national women’s team won the series by 2-1. She was part of the state team that won the senior women’s football championship in Bhilai in 2010.
She could not appear for Class 10 exam and finish school as it coincided with her camp for the AFC qualifier for Malaysia. In 2009 she had to quit the sports hostel in Bhubaneswar due to family’s financial problems. In 2013, she got married to a man who wasn’t earning much. She was denied jobs as she her educational qualifications didn’t met job criteria.
Her story is full of struggle and against all odds she performed and won laurels for the nation and now the real questions is “ Does she really deserve to be a Betel Seller “ ?? The answer we all wants to know……..
