The newly crowned Belarussian mommy, Victoria Azarenka, is set to make a return to the tour at Mallorca Open, from 19th June – 25th June, 2017, which is a clay tournament. She was expected to make a comeback later in July, during the hard season, but she has decided to schedule it early. She took a break from tennis, when she announced on 15th July, 2016, that she is pregnant. 5 months later, she gave birth to her son, Leo, on 19th December, 2016.
After a poor season in 2015, Azarenka was set to make a comeback in 2016, which she eventually achieved, in the first instalment of the hard season of the year. Beginning from the Brisbane International, she went on to win the title, without dropping a single set in the tournament. Later, she achieved a sunshine double, i.e. winning the Indian Wells and the Miami title in the same year, and became the 3rd woman, after Steffi Graf and Kim Clijsters to achieve this feat. She started her clay season at Madrid, where she retired in the third round, due to a back injury. Further, she lost her 1R match at Rome, and was later forced to retire in the 1R at the Roland Garros French Open, due to a knee injury, which also led to her withdrawal from The Wimbledon Championships, held in July.
She resists calling it a comeback. After all, she was not side-lined by injury, illness, burnout or misfortune. She has an advantage of the newly changed rules by the WTA, which gives the players an advantage in ranking, who take a maternity leave, or a leave due to an injury or so. Going by the rules, she will be given the special rank number 6.
