Five-time grand slam champion who is currently ranked 179th in the world will play two Mylan World Team Tennis matches for the Orange County Breakers , a team she has played for seven years on July 16.
Sharapova, who will be entering her seventh season with the Breakers, is scheduled to play the July 24 home match in Newport Beach, and opens up the season for the team on the road in San Diego on July 16.
Sharapova has not played in the Bank of the West since 2011 and has made just four appearances total in the event. Her best showing came in 2010, when she lost in the finals to Azarenka.
“It’s great to play for the Breakers again,” said Sharapova. “The competition in World Team Tennis is always strong so I’m excited to get back on the court.”
The Russian had originally planned to return for a hard court tournament on July 31 in Stanford, Calif.
