Roland Garros Day 4 Highlights: Tsonga knocked out, Rafa and Novak advances to third round

Match of the day:

Muguruza survived an early scare to overcome Kontaveit in three sets to reach the third round here at the Roland Garros. Muguruza won 7-6 6-4 6-2

Upset of the day:

Comeback run for the Czech Petra Kvitova ended today as she was defeated by the American qualifier Mattek Sands in two tight tie-break sets. Mattek Sands defeated Kvitova 7-6 7-6.

Frenchman Tsonga surrendered to the Argentine in a match which was continued after it was postponed yesterday due to bad light. Tsonga lost to Olivo in four sets. 5-7 4-6 7-6 4-6.

Nadal sails past Haase:

9-time French Open champion sails past the big-serving Dutch in an easy straight set match. Robin Haase showed no signs of competitive spirit in the first set but he was quite vulnerable in the second set as he came close to breaking Nadal in the second set. Nevertheless, relentless Mallorcan won with a scoreline of 6-1 6-4 6-3 on the Court Philippe Chatrier.

Djokovic and Thiem through to round 3:

Men’s defending champion and one of the favorites to win the RG this year defeated Portuguese Sousa in straight sets 6-1 6-4 6-3.
Austrian young gun Dominic Thiem overcame Italian Simon Bolelli in straight sets to reach yet another round 3 at the Roland Garros. Thiem won 7-5 6-1 6-3.

Johnson pulls out yet another emotional victory:

Big serving American, Steve Johnson pulled out a stunning victory against the young Borna Coric in a match which saw mixed emotions from either player. Coric, who was infuriated with himself got booed by the crowd at the end of the match for smacking his racquet. Johnson, on the other hand, got emotional after yet another victory. American won in 4 tight sets, 6-2 7-6 3-6 7-6.

Dimitrov and Pouille register easy wins:

Grigor Dimitrov registers an easy win over Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo in straight sets. Dimitrov won 6-3 6-4 7-5.

Lucas Pouille overcame the Tomas Bellucci in straight sets to please the home crowd. Lucas Pouille was quite clinical in his 7-6 6-1 6-2 victory over the Brazillian.

Wozniacki and Mladenovic register straight set wins:

Caroline Wozniacki crushed Canadian qualifier Abanda by serving her a double bagel.

Home-favourite Kristina Mladenovic brushed aside former French Open Champion Sara Errani in straight sets. Kristina won 6-2 6-3.

Not so easy for Goffin and Raonic:

Big-serving Milos Raonic gifted a break of serve to Dutra Silva in the first set and lost it 4-6. However, the Canadian finally overcame the hurdle to win the match in 4 sets. Milos won 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-4.

Belgian tennis ace David Goffin needed four sets to defeat Sergiy Stakhovsky. Goffin is through to round 3 of the French Open with a 6-2 6-4 3-6 6-3 victory over Stakhovsky.

Venus through in presence of her younger sister:

Venus Williams defeated Nara in a rather easy match which was seen by her younger sister, Serena Williams. Venus won 6-3 6-1.
