Roger Federer confirms Djokovic will skip inaugural Laver Cup

Roger Federer, in a press conference confirmed the absence of Novak Djokovic in the upcoming Laver Cup which is scheduled to be played between Europe and the rest of the world.

It is for the first time that this tournament is being played. The first edition will consist of 6-man teams and due to played in Prague later this September. There will be 2 teams, one of Europe which is to be captained by the legendary, Bjorn Borg and the 2nd team headed by the American John McEnroe.

The Serbian national would have easily qualified citing his status as the World No.4 but fell prey to an injury in the Wimbledon semis that forced him to withdraw from the tournament. Djokovic now doesn’t intend to play this tournament keeping in mind his recovery in progress.

Federer, whose company is managing the Laver Cup jointly, confirmed a day after his win over Marin Cilic in the finals about Djokovic’s news.

“Novak has already said no. He is expecting a child in that period. Though I am waiting for Murray’s answer and I hope he says yes cause it would be great to have him onboard.”

The World No. 2 Rafael Nadal is also in contention to feature alongside the Swiss in the tournament.
