Jelena Ostapenko overpowered title favourite Simona Halep to become first ever Latvian to win a grand slam singles crown.
She has won her first Grand Slam title just days after turning 20. The 20-year-old, ranked 47, had never been beyond the third round at a grand slam before nor won any other WTA title.
Jelena Ostapenko came from 4-6 down in the first set and 0-3 down in the second to beat Simona Halep 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Jelena Ostapenko lost first set as she was making too many unforced errors and trailing 0-3 in the second set and after losing three games in second set , she rallied to win six of the next seven games and force a third set. Ostapenko broke in the final game to claim the title hitting two stunning winners, ending with a crunching, solid backhand down the line with her 54th winner of the match.
Ostapenko also became first woman to win a Grand Slam after losing the first set since Jennifer Capriati’s win over Monica Seles at the 2001 Australian Open.
After winning her first grand slam Ostapenko said: “I think I cannot believe I’m the Roland Garros champion. I’m only 20 years old. I’m really happy. I have no words, it was my dream.”
Simona Halep said : “It’s a tough moment for me but it’s gonna go away, I hope, with time. I will keep working because I want to repeat what I have done”. Halep lost to Maria Sharapova in the finals at Roland Garross in year 2014.
With the win, Ostapenko will move up 35 spots to No. 12 in the WTA rankings. Halep, who also lost in the 2014 French Open final and still has yet to win a Grand Slam, will move from No. 4 to No. 2.
The unseeded , 20 year old player broke and set many records at French open 2017 and with this win she is no longer unseeded and a young sensational player in women’s tennis.
