Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal both booked their spots in the last-eight but day 8 witnessed some huge names fell by the wayside in the women’s draw as we are heading closer to the second Grand Slam of the year. Let’s take a look back at all the action of Day 8.
Match of the day:
Canadian number one and 5th seed Milos Raonic was ousted by the Spaniard Pablo CarrenoBusta in a strong 5-setter match. The gruelling affair between the two lasted 4 hours and 21 minutes with the last set going for an hour and 10 minutes. Pablo won 3 sets to 2. 4-6 7-6 6-7 6-4 8-6 in a match which saw 13 breaks of serves.
Upset of the day:
Defending champion GabrineMuguruza was defeated by home favourite Kristina Mladenovic in three sets 6-1 3-6 6-3. Tearful Muguruza lamented French Open crowd. She blasted the crowd for being disrespectful after she lost to the home hope.
Nadal through to the quarters :
9-time French Open champion surgedinto the quarterfinals for a record equalling 11th time. Nadal continued his ruthless form in Roland Garros by dispatching the Spanish 17th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets. Nadal won 6-1 6-2 6-2.
Djokovic and Thiem through to last 8 :
Men’s defending champion and one of the favourites to win the RG this year defeated Spanish 19th seed Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets 7-6 6-1 6-3. He will now face the young Austrian in the quarterfinals.
Austrian young gunDominic Thiem overcame uinseeded Argentine Zeballos in an emphatic fashion registering a straight sets victory to reach second consecutive quarterfinal at the Roland Garros. Thiem won 6-1 6-3 6-1.
Khachanov continues his dream run:
Russian unseeded player Khachanov continued his dream run as he ousted the big serving American John Isner in 4 sets. Russian won in 4 tight sets, 7-6 6-3 6-7 7-6.
Nishikori and Wozniacki stretched:
Caroline Wozniacki and Kei Nishikori were stretched to the decider in a match that was continued today. Nishikori won 7-5 6-4 6-7 0-6 6-4. Wozniacki won 6-1 4-6 6-2
Gasquet retires, Monfils through:
You just cannot keep away injuries from this grand slam as Gasquet was yet another player to retire mid match which saw Monfils through to the next round.
Baczinsky, Svitolina through :
Swiss 30th seed Timer Baczinsky crashed Venus Williams dream of a French Open title as she came back from a set down to finally defeat her in three sets. 5-7 6-2 6-1.
Ukrainian 5th seed Elina Svitolina defeated Polish unseeded player Linette in straight sets 6-4 7-5.
Second seed Pliskova register yet another clinical victory:
Czech hard hitter Pliskova registered a comprehensive victory over the German unseeded Witthoeft 7-5 6-1.
