ATP Halle: Roger Federer gets 1100th Match win

With just two weeks to go to Wimbledon, Roger Federer, an eight-time champion in Halle starts his second grass-court tournament of the year in a great fashion with a straight-sets win against Yuichi Sugita.

After Lu Yen-hsun withdrew with a right arm injury from the tournament, Qualifying Lucky loser, Yuichi Sugita got a chance into the main draw to play against Roger Federer.

Federer bounced back from his surprise first-round defeat against Tommy Haas in Stuttgart last week with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Yuichi Sugita of Japan in the opening round of Gerry Weber Open, Halle.

It was Federer’s 1,100th career victory. Jimmy Connors is on top of the list with 1256 wins.

Federer served eight aces and has converted five of his 13 break opportunities to clinch the win in 52 minutes. Federer will next face Mischa Zverev who defeated Lukas Lacko in straight sets.

In the Top Half of the draw, defending champion Florian Mayer has defeated Benoit Paire 6-0, 6-4 and sets up a clash with Stuttgart Champion Lucas Pouille. TThird seed Kei Nishikori has defeated Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in three sets 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of Halle.

In the bottom half of the draw, Bautista Agut sets up a clash with showman Dustin Brown. The match of the day is between all Germans Philip Kohlschreiber and Alexander Zverev. Richard Gasquet who defeated Gael Monfils will face off Bernand Tomic and Robin Haase who defeated David Ferrer in the opening round will face the 2nd seed, Dominic Thiem.
