Sergio Romero may be the best back up keeper right now in world football but to be second in pecking order with this much talent you must have an exceptional enforcer like DeGea at the top level. The Argentinian stopper has signed a 4 year new deal with the Red Devils which may impact De Gea’s future or play a part.
Romero’s new contract was confirmed in a statement, per Mark Froggatt of United’s official website. He noted how the back-up ‘keeper’s new deal also has the option to extend for a fifth year.
Romero expressed his delight at penning fresh terms, per the statement:
“I am delighted to have signed a new contract. Who wouldn’t want to be at the biggest club in the world? We have great goalkeepers here and we are always learning from each other. Of course, it was a very proud moment for me and my family to be part of the Europa League final, and I am looking forward to helping the team build on last season’s success in 2017/18.”
Mourinho was full praise for Romero who moved to Manchester on a free transfer and said : “Sergio is a great goalkeeper and professional. He had a good season and outstanding performances, especially in our Europa League success. Sergio deserves his contract, and for Manchester United to have Sergio and David is amazing in such an important role.”
With 14 wins in 18 games and 12 clean sheets he has only conceded 6 goals but may well have to spent the next season waiting for his chances again if De Gea is in full fitness though Mourinho granted him Cup and Europa league football last season with Champions league contention this time the chances of playing are meagre for him.
With Real Madrid hot on the tails of United to notch De Gea it is crucial that they has stability and cover in the form of Romero at the other end in case the transfer happens.
The 30 year old was produced some brilliant last minute saves to deny the opposition and fetch 3 points for United and helped them to clinch their first ever Europa league beating Ajax 2-0 in the finals in Stockholm.
