Season preview Manchester United
The old guards slithered their way back into the prestigious Champions League after some seasons of rebuilding and revival and will be a force to reckon with if they start producing goals upfront in a proliferated manner to what they managed last season as the defence seems solid with addition of Victor Lindelof from Benfica and Eric Bailly playing as a second fiddle. With stalwart Zlatan Ibrahimovich departing the club someone Romelu Lukaku is an ideal replacement for the Swedish huntsman and United have got a real poacher in form of Lukaku who was the second highest scorer in Premier League last season only second to Harry Kane. Lukaku brings the dynamism United frontline have been missing and will fare very well from the services of Paul Pogba and Juan Mata.
Last season under Jose Mourinho United played to his philosophy and yielded results ultimately at the end of season and will be looking to replicate or go better certainly and challenge for the Premier League title. A solid start to the season will be the key in setting the tempo and rhythm which was the weak link last season where they struggled at the start. Departure of Wayne Rooney was sentimental to the United fans but Mourinho has filled the void with vibrant new signings that will make fans feel like the old United again if the squad manages to play to their potential.
United’s pre season was everything they’d hoped for after thumping arch rivals Manchester city 2-0 and getting the better of European Champions Real Madrid on penalties their confidence must be sky high before the start of the season. Mourinho has reiterated in his recent press conferences that he needs couple of more players to provide more flexibility to his squad and have good options in this hectic season ahead.
United today completed the signing of Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic from Chelsea and this could be a blessing in disguise for Pogba who was deployed in a more deeper role in the midfield to provide balance to the squad, but now with the arrival of Matic he is an ideal defensive midfielder who could infiltrate quality passes and provide cover at the same time for the defence. With Herrera and Pogba in the heart of things United have by far the most established midfield than any other side albeit Kante-Bakayoko pairing will be one to watch out for.
United play Real Madrid for UEFA Super Cup before their first match in Premier Legue and will be looking to lift their first silverware of the season. This year could be promising for the United fans as their team look a major force to be reckoned with and can scale heights if they are not complacent. With Valencia they have one of the best players in league at that position and with Lukaku and midfield of that stature, Martial and Lingard chipping in with momentary brilliance this team can go far in Champions League where English teams have struggled and are worthy title contenders.
