Europa League Final Preview : Ajax Amsterdam vs Manchester United

Ajax Amsterdam vs Manchester United : Preview

By Chirag Chillar

If you would have asked any Manchester United fan, and how dearly they want to win the Europa League in the beginning of the season, not many would have expressed their concerns. But, come the end of the season and that’s what is on everyone’s mind. While the chance to secure a European trophy is always important, it is the offer of Champions League football that has drawn the most attention. Mourinho’s first season at Manchester United has seen ups and down but their record in Europa has been one to saviour. Unbeaten in 10 with 7 wins, they definitely go on a high into the finals, but the sending off of Bailly in the Semis may prove to be a factor.

Ajax are into what it is their first European final in 21 years. Seeking their first continental silverware in 22 years, Ajax are the underdogs entering this week’s clash in Sweden, but it could well be the start of something extremely special for this talented group of youngsters. They have been the entertainers in this season’s Europa league with more attempts on goal (225) and more attempts on target (95) than any other team. Their attack has been saving them from defensive fragilities. But it would be tough going against a well marshalled Jose’s team.

It may not be as glittering as the Champions League, but the stakes are high here as well. While United would have their eyes on the main prize – Champions League football – Ajax have already qualified for the competition for next season and are dead set on winning a trophy.

Our Prediction: Manchester United win though it would be tensed night in Stockholm.
