Cristiano Ronaldo, the hero in Real Madrid’s historic back-to-back Champions League trophies,La Liga title and locking up a fifth Ballon d’Or has stunned Real Madrid by telling them that he wants to leave the club over allegations of tax evasion. Sources close to the Portuguese star has also confirmed the same story.
Ronaldo was charged by Spain’s prosecutor’s office for allegedly failing to pay taxes on nearly €15 million of income from the years 2011 to 2014 by hiding part of his income using an off-shore shell company.
Portuguese sports paper A Bola broke the news first, headlined “Ronaldo Wants to Leave Spain.” Their report stated that “despite the player’s deep passion for Real,” Ronaldo is “deeply disillusioned with the whole situation.”
Ronaldo is satisfied that he has paid all his taxes and was said to be very mad with the investigation and thinks it would be better for him to join a club outside Spain. Real Madrid however, are calm about the situation. They obviously don’t want to lose Ronaldo and confident of being able to talk him down from leaving the club. But they make it clear that they will not hold anyone against their will and that if Ronaldo does leave, it will be the club that sets the terms of the transfer, not the player. The release clause in Ronaldo’s contract is €1 billion.
With the rumors in the air, which team will Ronaldo consider joining, that’s an obvious question. At this moment, Manchester United are the only obvious club that can afford Cristiano Ronaldo. Although United would want him in their squad butcurrently they are pressing ahead with the transfer plans they already have in place for now. That includes a bid for Real striker Alvaro Morata and continued negotiations over Ivan Perisic.
Will Real Madrid hold Ronaldo back or will we see the reunion of Manchester United and Ronaldo? Only time will tell.
