India vs Aus Ist T20 : India Beat Australia by 9 Wickets in Rain-curtailed Match

(By Chinmay Pagar)

The format changed, Aussie skipper changed but the script for the first T20I between India and Australia was almost the copied from ODI series and pasted on JSCA Stadium in Ranchi as India comfortably won the game by 9 wickets (D/L method). India has now won 7th successive T20I against Australia. Talk about domination!

India won the toss and invited Warner, who replaced injured Smith as a captain, to bat first. The happiness of captaining the team didn’t last long for Warner as Bhuvi picked his wicket immediately after 2 consecutive boundaries in the first over. The Finch-Maxwell partnership steadied the innings but Chahal was back to haunt Maxwell one more time as he picked his wicket for the 4th consecutive time. Finch was taking his side to a good score but a beauty by Kuldeep almost yorked him to finish a good innings of 42 and triggered yet another middle-order/middle overs collapse.

The Aussie innings went downhill from 76-2 to 118-8 courtesy of Bumrah’s two wickets, wrist-spinners’ magic and Kohli’s unbelievable direct throw from long-on to run Christian out. Indian bowlers would have won an Olympic medal in hitting the stumps today, as they bowled 6 Aussie batsmen in the game. The rain stopped the game at 118-8 at 18.4 overs and it continued for almost 90 minutes, making it impossible for Aussies to finish the innings (or for India to bowl them out!). The Indians were given the target of 48 runs in 6 overs.

There were very few people who had any doubts about the result of the game but Rohit started with a four on the first ball of innings and a six in the first ball of 2nd over to make the target more simple. Coulter Nile picked his wicket on the next ball and 2 close calls for run-out between Kohli and Dhawan meant there was a fear of anti-climax in Ranchi. But both batsmen scored 3 boundaries each to pick up an easy win for India with 3 balls remaining.

Kuldeep Yadav was awarded Man of the Match for his spell of 4-0-16-2, where picked up two important wickets of Finch and Henriques, which prompted the (well-known?) Aussie-fall. India now lead 1-0 in the 3 match series and will look to seal the series in the next game at Guwahati. Aussies on the other hand, need to do something special very soon to save the embarrassment and Warner will be scratching his head for the ideas, anybody volunteering to help him?
