ICC Champions Trophy Australia vs England : England Send Australia Home

Two-time champions Australia knocked out of the tournament by host team England in a rain affected match at Edgbaston.

In a must win match put into bat, Australia lodged a decent score of 277 runs , Aaron Finch (68) and Steve Smith (56) blasted twin half centuries at the top, while Head scored an unbeaten fifty down the order after England decided to bowl.

Seamer Wood (4/33) and spinner Rashid (4/41) snapped four wickets each, while Ben Stokes (1/49) took one wicket .(Scorecard)

Chasing 278, England were expected to make early inroads. Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes pair played an impressive 159-run partnership and completely changed the course of the game. Morgan then, unfortunately, went back to pavilion but the game was already won.

Ben Stokes then went to complete his ton, while Jos Buttler played his bit part role before the rain-gods became the spoilsport yet again. The players went back to hut while England were at 240/4 in 40.2 and eventually the game was called off. England won the encounter by 40 runs on DLS.

England win by 40 runs and win the group with three victories. They will play the runners-up of group B in Wednesday’s semi-final. Bangladesh have made it to the semi-finals of a global tournament for the first time. Australia and NZ, World Cup winners and runners-up two years ago will go home.
