ICC Champions Trophy - Sri Lanka stuns India by 7 wickets

Sri Lanka outclass India by 7 wickets in their second game of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy at The Oval.

Shikhar Dhawan’s 125 and half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Mahendra Singh Dhoni helped team India in scoring 321 runs for loss of 6 wickets but men in blue lost to Sri Lanka even after scoring 321 runs.

Danushka Gunathilaka (76 off 72 balls) and Kusal Mendis (89 off 93) added 159 runs to lay the platform before skipper Angelo Mathews (52 no off 44 balls) coolly finished off the job in company of Kusal Janith Perera (47 retired hurt) and Asela Gunaratne (34 no off 21 balls) and with this  chase Sri Lanka, achieved the highest successful run chase in the tournament’s history.

The result of the match opens up the group perfectly with both the final games of the group; South Africa vs India and Sri Lanka vs Pakistan being virtual quarter-finals with the winners going through, with all the teams being evenly matched on 2 points.

Kusal Mendis (Man of the Match): “Very good wicket. India had a good start, with Dhawan making a hundred. But for us, Danushka supported me very well. It was my first game against India and I’m happy to have contributed. Very bad [about causing Danushka’s run out] but after Angelo and Kusal batted, I was very happy.”

Angelo Mathews: “It’s one of the top wins, to beat India. It was a fantastic wicket. The bowlers did brilliantly to restrict India to 321. it’s a very chaseable target. I tried to hit as many balls in the nets as possible, it makes you feel good and that helped me come back from injury. Wasn’t easy for Gunathilaka to walk into the side and bat like how he did. Kusal is a great player, and Kusal Perera also batted really well. Those partnerships were crucial. It’s a must-win game for all of us in the group.”

Virat Kohli: “We felt we had enough on the board, we trusted out bowlers, but Sri Lanka were pretty good. They kept the momentum through the innings, they picked their areas to hit and executed really well. There’s always hindsight. I thought we bowled decently. But when you don’t execute properly, there is always food for thought. Here you have to give credit to the other team.
