On Day 3 Captain Smith had a task in his mind and bet he delivered better the anyone else. Starting the day at the lead of 298 Smith just didn’t gave India any chance to come back. The lead alone on the start of the day was enough but every shot, every single run was hurting India as Australia finally set a target of 441.
In the process, Steven smith banged his 18th and probably the best test century in the 3rd innings on a rank turner. Steve O`keef bowled beautifully in the first innings to restrict India to a total that was never expected and surely, he wanted to prove a point that that was not just luck or bad shots by Indian batsmen. He was looking like taking wicket in every over he bowled. He smashed a Sixer again in the second innings that includes players in form like Vijay, Pujara, Kohli & Rahane. Nathan lyon despite getting 4 wickets I can say was a bit unlucky on a spinner`s haven. He probably deserved more but still he supported his fellow team mate who was consistently taking wickets from the other end. O`keefe Lyon show ended India`s run chase again on a unimaginable total of 107. India lost a test match by 333 runs on home soil in tow and a half days.
In the post-match presentation Steve Smith appreciated the effort of the team was very excited after winning the opening match of the series.
Steve Smith said: It was going to be hard work, but I’m proud of the way the boys pulled off this Test match. Winning the toss was important. The quick bowlers got us off to a quick start in the first innings, and then both spinners did well. We’ve got a very well-rounded squad. I’m really proud of the boys. It’s been 4,502 days since Australia won in India. Incredible performance. (On Steve’s O’Keefe’s heroics) I think he was disappointed with the way he started on his first day, but he pulled back incredibly. Hopefully he will be a key player in the rest of the series. To score a hundred here in India, on a second innings wicket like that, took a lot of determination. Hopefully we can carry on some good cricket in Bangalore.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli just accepted the blow on the chin and said that it was a necessary lesson for all of us and team will be ready for Bengaluru. Steve O`keef was announced man of the match for his match winning 12 wickets in a match.
