1st T20I: India beat New Zealand by 53 runs and a dream farewell for Ashish Nehra

India defeated New Zealand by 53 runs , celebrated their first ever win over New Zealand in a T20 match at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium , New Delhi on Wednesday to take 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

India was put to bat by Kane Williamson, but that did not stop the hosts from scoring as they posted a mammoth total of 202-3 from 20 overs, thanks to knocks by Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. In reply, New Zealand never found their way, as the Indian bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals.

India restricted New Zealand to 149/8 in the first T20I, putting up an allround performance in Ashish Nehra’s final international match.

Nehra, who had a career which lasted a little over 18 years, had first played for India in a Test match against Sri Lanka back in 1999.

Ashish Nehra bid adieu to his international career and said his body will be at peace and he said :

“I will miss all this. That’s what you train for. One thing which will definitely be at peace will be my body. I said earlier that I can go a couple more years, but there can’t be a better time to walk away,” Nehra said after his swansong game in international cricket.

I must be the one bowler who sent down the last over most number of times for India. But those times were different. There was no pressure today.”

“I played my first game here in 1997. The rules have changed and so many runs are being scored. But whatever happens, this team is here to stay. The future of Indian cricket is in safe hands for the next six-seven years,” he said
